Third Trimester - Pregnancy

A pregnancy needs monitoring by either Family physician or Obstetrician (doctor who specialises in pregnancy and childbirth.), who will see you through the nine months.

Testing for pregnancy

A simple blood or urine test can determine whether you are pregnant. The tests detects a hormone called HcG, which the body produces when a fertilized egg attaches to the wall of the uterus.
Home pregnancy tests available in the market are also quite reliable.

Symptoms of pregnancy

Missed period
Tender, swollen breasts
Nausea with or without vomiting
Increased urination
Fatigue
Food cravings
Mood Swings

Third Trimester - 29 to 40 weeks

What to expect in the 3rd trimester

Your baby is getting into position for birth. You may experience the following

Bloating and gas
Faintness or dizziness
Stuffy nose due to high levels of estrogen and progesterone, which increase blood flow to the mucous membrane
Bleeding gums due to high hormonal levels
Hyperpigmentation of the skin
Enlarged uterus may rest on your sciatica nerve, causing sharp, shooting pain that radiates from the bottom of the spine, down the back of your legs.

What should you do?

Your baby puts on weight. Take care

Plan for birth

Keep active & practice deep breathing

See your paediatrician

Your baby’s growth in the third trimester.

At the beginning of the third trimester, your baby weighs a little more than 1 Kg and measures 38 cm from head to toe.
Bones are almost developed, but they’re still soft and pliable. He will continue to add fat.
He can open his eyes and turn his head.
This trimester lasts until the end of week 39, until week 42, after which labour is induced.
