What is acne?

09 May, 2017

Acne is a common skin condition that affects most people at some point. It causes spots to develop on the skin, usually on the face, back and chest.

What causes acne?

Acne is caused when tiny holes in the skin, known as hair follicles, become blocked due to excess sebum- a substance normally produced by the oil glands in the skin to keep the skin moist. Acne is thought to be triggered by increased levels of a hormone called testosterone, which occurs during puberty. Acne can run in families

Other factors that act as triggers for acne.

  • Oil in skin products
  • Pollution and humidity
  • Headband, sports helmets, backpacks, tight collars, or tight sports uniforms etc which put pressure on an affected area
  • Squeezing or picking at blemishes
  • Stress or certain medications
